This test detects antibodies that develop in response to Treponema pallidum, the bacteria that causes syphilis. This is the most accurate test for this bacterium. Early detection and treatment of syphilis is the best way to protect against serious complications.

Test results may take 3 to 4 business days once the specimen is received by the laboratory. When the result is positive, additional tests including a rapid plasma reagin (RPR) are used to confirm infection with syphilis.

What is Syphilis?

Syphilis is a common sexually transmitted bacterial infection caused by the bacteria, Treponema pallidum. Syphilis often does not produces any visible symptoms. The primary indication of the infection typically is a small painless sore, a chancre, that can develop around sexual organs, rectum or inside the mouth.

There are four stages of syphilis. During the first two stages, the infection is most contagious and but be cured. In the later stages the disease can progress into life-threatening conditions.
