What is Herpes?

Herpes simplex virus (HSV) is an infection that causes sores or lesions. Herpes type 1 (HSV-1) typically affects your mouth and herpes type 2 (HSV-2) affects your genitals. Type 1 is most common and produces cold sores and blisters around the mouth. Type 2, also known as genital herpes, develops sores in the genital and rectum area. Both types of herpes are highly contagious and spread easily from a person to another.
